Radiant Heat Installation Overview

Oilheat Warms An Impressive Country Manor House
Excerpts reprinted from Oilheating magazine

We love to tell any story about oilheating going into a new home. The new oilheated home in this story is a particular pleasure to report - first, because it is a showcase house and, second, because it was built by a well-known and respected oilheat personality.

Doug Woosnam is the former owner and president of Sinkler, Inc. in Southampton, PA. Since his company's acquisition by Petroleum Heat & Power Inc., he has served PETRO as director of governmental and industry affairs. He also serves as director of acquisitions for Star Gas Propane, LP, focusing his efforts in the Northeast and Middle-Atlantic states.

Doug has been active in local, regional, and state associations. He is a past president of the Delaware Valley Fuel Dealers Association, the Better Home Heat Council of Delaware Valley, and the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association.

At the national level, Doug Woosnam has served as chairman of the Heating Fuels Committee and the Member Services Committee of the Petroleum Marketers Association of America. He is currently Northeast Regional Vice-chairman for PMAA, a position he has held since January 1998.

THE HOUSE
Woosnam's new home is a 12,000-square-foot home in Solebury (New Hope Township) in Pennsylvania. The design is reminiscent of a 17th century village rectory, which was considered at the time to be one of the finest homes in all of England. This was no accident. Doug's wife Jill selected the house from a photo album of beautiful European homes. Construction was begun in November 1997 and completed in October 1998.

THE HEATING PLANT
The oilfired heating system is hydronics based, with radiant floor heating on the first floor and forced air heating on the second and third floors. Radiant floor heating is used in the lower level, the first floor, the second floor master bathroom, and the four-car garage.

Heat for the air ducts is supplied from heat exchangers fed by boiler water. Air ducting runs throughout the house to also supply cooling in summer. Forced air is supplied by five Unico high-velocity air handlers; three are used for both heating and cooling on the second floor and two are used on the first floor and lower level for cooling only.

For the radiant heat, seven water temperatures are supplied to the nine radiant floor zones, which are installed with 1/2-inch radiant tubing from Wirsbo. Because the radiant heating extends under a variety of floor materials and coverings--such as:

antique wood flooring, carpet, limestone, bluestone, and Mexican tile--the control system has to be able to provide different water temperatures for these as well as to meet thermostat settings in various locations.

The boiler is a Viessmann 300,000 btuh unit, fired at 2.25 gph through a Riello burner. Combustion air is supplied from outside the building and the draft is power vented. Boiler water temperature is controlled by an outdoor reset temperature control. Oil is stored in two basement tanks of 330-gallons.

The house has six full bath rooms and two half-baths, so domestic hot water is a an important part of the heating plant design. Heated tap water is supplied by indirect water heating from the boiler. Heated boiler water is continuously circulated through a 92-gallon Viessmann stainless steel storage tank to maintain a ready supply of hot water.
